  • Q: Is it legal for a dentist to prescribe the drug, Tylox? What is this drug?

A: Tylox capsules contain a combination of oxycodone and acetaminophen. The ingredient oxycodone is a semisynthetic narcotic which relieves pain(analgesic) and acts in a similar manner to that of morphine. The main action of oxycodone is on the central nervous system and the smooth muscles in the organism, causing sedation (making the individual feel sleepy) and analgesia (pain relief). In addition, these capsules contain also acetaminophen, which is the ingredient in the well known Tylenol capsules. Tylox capsules are a schedule 2 substance. In other words, in order to prescribe it, the health worker must have a Drug Enforcement Registration (DEA) certificate. Filling out a triplicate DEA prescription form is necessary. The reason as to why such extreme care should be exerted in prescribing this drug is that it is an analog to morphine, thus possibly producing drug dependence and having the potential for being abused. The usual dose is one capsule every 4 to 6 hours, as needed for pain. Dosage is to be adjusted depending of how bad the pain is.
