Q: How long should a couple who is trying to conceive wait to consider infertility as a problem?

A: Infertility is defined as the inability of a couple to conceive after one year of unprotected intercourse. Approximately 3 to 5 million people are affected in the United States. When this occurs, and the couple wishes to have children, the couple shoud visit their physician so that he/she performs an infertility evaluation. Such an evaluation can usually be completed within 2 to 3 months, and, in most cases, reveals the cause of infertility. The main causes of infertility include inadequate functioning of the ovaries, defects of the way the sperm functions or is delivered, or problems with the Fallopian tubes.
