Revolutionary Treatment for Parkinson’s

UK scientists believe they created a groundbreaking form of therapy that could revolutionize the way Parkinson’s disease is treated.
One of the patients involved in the gene-therapy trial, Sheila Roy, says it was like turning back the clock 10 years.

She is one of only 15 people worldwide to have had the new treatment, which effectively creates a medicine factory in her brain.
Parkinson’s disease occurs when the brain gradually stops producing the nerve-controlling chemical dopamine. Over time, symptoms such as tremors, slow movement and stiffness get worse.
ProSavin, the new treatment, uses a “stripped-down” virus to transport dopamine-making genes into the brain. It is injected into a region called the striatum that helps control movement.
Once the virus gets into the brain cells, it reprograms them to gradually start producing their own dopamine.






Anxiety Increases Stroke Risk!

People with high levels of anxiety are 33 percent more likely to suffer a stroke, as compared to their less anxious counterparts, researchers say.
“Anxiety is a very common condition in the general population, but it’s also a modifiable behavior,” says Maya Lambiase, postdoctoral scholar in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and lead author of the report. “Assessment and treatment of anxiety has the potential to not only improve overall quality of life, but also reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases, such as stroke, later in life.”

Previous studies have found that higher levels of anxiety are associated with increased risk for coronary heart disease, but few studies have investigated the connection between anxiety and stroke. This study, published in the journal Stroke, is the first to report an association between higher anxiety symptoms and an increased risk for stroke, despite other risk factors such as depression.
Anxiety disorders affect nearly 20 percent of American adults in any given year, and are characterized by feelings of fear, unease, and worry, often lasting at least six months. Feelings of stress and anxiety are also common in people who feel depressed or have other mental health problems, including alcohol or substance abuse. Stroke, which occurs when blood flow to a part of the brain stops, is the number four killer and a leading cause of disability in the US.

-Medication can help, if you know what to do. The seven FDA-approved medications (like nicotine patches or gum) really do help smokers quit. Most folks don’t use them correctly so be sure to follow the directions!
It’s never too late to quit. While it’s best to quit smoking as early as possible, quitting smoking at any age will enhance the length and quality of your life. You’ll also save money and avoid the hassle of going outside in the cold to smoke.
-Every smoker can quit. At the American Lung Association, we firmly believe that every smoker can quit. Each person needs to find the right combination of techniques for them and above all, they need to keep trying.

Spinal Disc Herniation

A Spinal disc herniation is a medical condition affecting the spine in which a tear in the outer, fibrous ring of an inter-vertebral disc allows the soft, central portion (nucleus pulposus) to bulge out beyond the damaged outer rings. Disc herniation is usually due to age related degeneration of the annulus fibrosus, although trauma, lifting injuries, or straining have been implicated. Tears are almost always postero-lateral in nature owing to the presence of the posterior longitudinal ligament in the spinal canal. This tear in the disc ring may result in the release of inflammatory chemical mediators which may directly cause severe pain, even in the absence of nerve root compression.
Disc herniation’s are normally a further development of a previously existing disc “protrusion”, a condition in which the outermost layers of the annulus fibrosus are still intact, but can bulge when the disc is under pressure. In contrast to a herniation, none of the nucleus pulposus escapes beyond the outer layers.
Most minor herniation’s heal within several weeks. Anti-inflammatory treatments for pain associated with disc herniation, protrusion, bulge, or disc tear are generally effective. Severe herniation’s may not heal of their own accord and may require surgical intervention.
The condition is widely referred to as a slipped disc, but this term is not medically accurate as the spinal discs are firmly attached between the vertebrae and cannot “slip”.
Nerve conduction studies tests measure the electrical impulse along nerve roots, peripheral nerves, and muscle tissue. This will indicate whether there is ongoing nerve damage, if the nerves are in a state of healing from a past injury, or whether there is another site of nerve compression.
