Uses

  • Temporary relief of congestion of nose, sinuses and throat caused by allergies, colds or sinusitis.
  • Treats congestion of eustachian tubes caused by middle ear infections.

Dosage & Usage Information

How to take:
According to package directions.

When to take:
As needed, no more often than every 4 hours.

If you forget a dose:
Take when you remember. Wait 4 hours for next dose. Never double a dose.

What drug does:
Contracts blood vessel walls of nose, sinus and throat tissues, enlarging airways.

Time lapse before drug works:
5 to 30 minutes.

Don't take with:
Non-prescription drugs for asthma, cough, cold, allergy, appetite suppressants, sleeping pills or drugs containing caffeine without consulting doctor.

Overdose

SYMPTOMS:
Headache, heart palpitations, vomiting, blood pressure rise, slow and forceful pulse.

WHAT TO DO:

  • Dial 911 (emergency) or O (operator) for an ambulance or medical help. Then give first aid immediately.
  • See EMERGENCY Information.

Possible Adverse Reactions or Side Effects

Life-threatening:

    In case of overdose, see Overdose section.

Common:

  • Fast or pounding heartbeat.
  • Headache or dizziness; shakiness; insomnia; burning, dryness, stinging inside nose; nervousness.

Infrequent:

    Paleness.

Rare:

    Unusual sweating.

Warnings & Precautions

Don't take if:
You are allergic to any sympathomimetic.

Before you start, consult your doctor:

  • If you have high blood pressure.
  • If you have heart disease.
  • If you have diabetes.
  • If you have overactive thyroid.
  • If you have taken MAO inhibitors in past 2 weeks.

Over age 60:
Adverse reactions and side effects may be more frequent and severe than in younger persons.

Pregnancy:
Risk to unborn child outweighs drug benefits. Don't use.

Breast-feeding:
Drug passes into milk. Avoid drug or discontinue nursing until you finish medicine. Consult doctor for advice on maintaining milk supply.

Infants & children:
Use only under close supervision.

Prolonged use:

  • Rebound* congestion and chemical irritation of nasal membranes.
  • May cause functional dependence.
  • Talk to your doctor about the need for follow-up medical examinations or laboratory studies to check blood pressure, ECG*.

Skin & sunlight:
No problems expected.

Driving, piloting or hazardous work:
No problems expected.

Discontinuing:
May be unnecessary to finish medicine. Follow doctor's instructions.

Others:
No problems expected.
