APPENDIX 10: INSTRUCTIONS FOR COLLECTING A 24-HOUR URINE SPECIMEN
Equipment
  • 24-hour collecting container, usually provided by laboratory.
  • Label for name, address, name of physician and time of collection.
  • Preservative tablet to add to container after first voiding.
  • Facilities to keep total collection cool.

    Precautions

  • Tell the operator if you have recently taken any medications listed in the description of a particular medical test under TAKING THESE DRUGS MAY AFFECT TEST RESULTS. You may be asked not to take this medication before the test.
  • Avoid contaminating specimen with toilet paper or stool.
  • If anything happens to prevent collection of part of even one voiding, discard your total collection. Begin again.

    Description

  • At any time of the day, begin a 24-hour urine specimen collection by emptying your bladder completely. Discard this sample. Note time of day.
  • Begin a 24-hour collection with the next voiding.
  • Place the voiding in the container.
  • Add preservative to the urine in the container.
  • Keep collected urine cool or refrigerated. Don't freeze.
  • Immediately after each subsequent voiding, add voided urine to 24-hour collection container.
  • If any urine is lost, restart the collection. Start at a time that will make the 24-hour collection terminate when the laboratory is open.
  • Collect the last specimen exactly 24 hours after the collection begins.
  • Send labeled container to laboratory immediately.
