| APPENDIX 10: INSTRUCTIONS FOR COLLECTING A 24-HOUR URINE SPECIMEN |
Equipment
- 24-hour collecting container, usually provided by laboratory.
- Label for name, address, name of physician and time of collection.
- Preservative tablet to add to container after first voiding.
- Facilities to keep total collection cool.
Precautions
- Tell the operator if you have recently taken any medications listed in the description
of a particular medical test under TAKING THESE DRUGS MAY AFFECT TEST RESULTS. You may be
asked not to take this medication before the test.
- Avoid contaminating specimen with toilet paper or stool.
- If anything happens to prevent collection of part of even one voiding, discard your
total collection. Begin again.
Description
- At any time of the day, begin a 24-hour urine specimen collection by emptying your
bladder completely. Discard this sample. Note time of day.
- Begin a 24-hour collection with the next voiding.
- Place the voiding in the container.
- Add preservative to the urine in the container.
- Keep collected urine cool or refrigerated. Don't freeze.
- Immediately after each subsequent voiding, add voided urine to 24-hour collection
container.
- If any urine is lost, restart the collection. Start at a time that will make the 24-hour
collection terminate when the laboratory is open.
- Collect the last specimen exactly 24 hours after the collection begins.
- Send labeled container to laboratory immediately.
