| APPENDIX 17: PINWORM DETECTION |
Paddle
Technique
- Use a small, wood paddle.
- Apply clear adhesive or tape to paddle so sticky surface is exposed.
- Early one morning, before rising, press the adhesive surface to several spots around the
rectum and surrounding skin.
- Take the paddle to your physician's office or the laboratory for examination for pinworm
eggs.
Flashlight Technique
- Shine a focused flashlight beam on the skin around the anus of a child who has been
asleep for about 2 hours.
- Look for small, white material that moves.
- Pinworms look like tiny pieces of white thread.
Other Techniques
- If you suspect pinworms and neither the paddle nor flashlight techniques prove their
existence, follow the instruction in Appendix XII on collecting a stool specimen for
laboratory examination.
