Notice to Our Readers

All CDC recommendations for meningococcal vaccine for travelers published previously as Advisory Memoranda have been rescinded. These include recommendations for the following countries: Saudi Arabia, Nepal, India, Kenya, Burundi and Tanzania.  Additionally, Mongolia is deleted, although no advisory was issued.  Mongolia is listed along with Kenya, Tanzania, and Burundi in the most recent edition of Health Information for International Travel (HIIT)1996-97.  Recommendations for the vaccine remain in effect for all countries in the meningitis belt of Africa (see map in HIIT, p.140) for the months of December through June.  While no longer a CDC recommendation, Saudi Arabia still requires the vaccine for all pilgrims to the hajj.
