I have suffered from Migraines for quite a while now. I take Excedrin but that isn't enough for me.

Does anyone know the best forms of relief? What works?

David, my son also suffers from migrianes and sees a neurologist. If you haven't yet, you should aks your Dr. about this option. Some of the medications can really knock you on your *** but, at least you wont be in pain. In the mean time we have also found that regular (not asperine free) Excedrin chased with a cup of coffee or can of Coca Cola or Excedrin and Benadryl can provide extra relief. I really hope this helps. Cheryl

I have suffered from migranes for years and just recently found something that actually works!! I take 1 Zomig(5mg) and 2 Vioxx(25mg) at the onset and it really works. It even works after the migrane is full blown. It has given me my life back. I had tried using only Zomig a couple years ago-didnt work. I think its the combination that works for me. Best of luck.

David and to whomever may need help,
I have lived with migraines all of the 21 years of my life. I get a bad about once a month, sometimes more often, sometimes a little less often, but 1 a month is about average. I have tried just about every legal over the counter and non-over the counter pain killer there is, you name it and I have probably tried it. One person mentioned Zomeg, even that didn't touch me. I take two, Motrin IB 200mg pills, and the majority of the time, that will get rid of the pain. Also, what I do, when the pain killers don't work, is I have an ice bag, pick one up at your local pharmacy, I fill it with steaming hot water, place a wash wrag on my forhead and the upper part of my face, then put the bag on top of it. Most of the time, it relaxes me, gets me calmed down. Lay down and get yourself comfortable. I have had over 200 bad migraines in my life, and I am only 21, and this is the only thing that works for me. I am trying to find a doctor who specilizes in migraines, does anyone know of anybody, anywhere in the country, I'll go. I hope this helps David, the life of a migraine sufferer is not fun, I now of nothing but that life, so I know what you are going through.

I am so sorry David that you are going thru this awful pain. I never suffered from migrane headaches, but my best friend did. She started to take daily complete, and harmony, and she did a herbal cleansing. She no longer has migraines.
I hope that these headaches stop for you David, I used to watch my friend, and it is not a nice thing to go thru.

hi...
I'm not a sufferer myself. I have some general queries.

how do you know that your migrane is strong enough to equate to a migrane? how do you know it isn't a headache?

are you worried that your headaches are a symptom of an underlying medical problem?

My fiance suffers 3-4 times a week with what he calls migranes for the past 4 years....(i don't know how much pain he feels, he might be exaggerating to get my TLC...) he hates going to the doctor. I'm worried he might have something wrong with him... i know i shouldn't be posting on the net and i should be marching him down to the docs straight aay, but he's in ireland and i live in england, so....i can't.

Please give me your opinions. have you been to the doc? what did they say?

Im 20 and have had headaches all my life. When i was 7 my parents thought that it was because i might need glasses but when checked, my eyesight was fine. I was taken to an eye toxicologist, but that wasnt helpful. About 6 months ago i got glasses but that hasnt stopped the headaches from occuring, and then 2 months ago i ended up in hospital with a migrane that nearly made me pass out, accompanied by very heavy nose bleeds (i've never had a nosebleed before this). The doctors at the hospital intravenously medicated me with Pethidine and Tramadol both times i was there, and then gave me Tramadol and Voltaren prescriptions. The Tramadol works but it makes me very sleepy and causes nausea or vomiting. The doctors had no idea what it was that was wrong with me, but they didnt do any head scans. I went to my G.P later on and she took blood tests and said it was just a head virus.
I was just wondering if anyone else had ever had something similar to this, and do you have any suggestions for other medication i can take that wont make me feel like im as high as a kite all day?
Thank you

David,

your migranes sound like a serious problem and you need to see a doctor immediately. This could be a case of a poor diet, too much stress, insulin deficiency, or a serious condition.

you need to see a doctor!!!

Hi group, my mom has been having migranes and or cluster headaches(some doctors say both)for all her life, she can remember having them at age 3-4 she has had them since then, she moved to the US from the Caribbean and they were better she finds that winter is very aggreable with her, she wants to try Zomig, she has tried almost everything but Sebelium,I'm wondering if you think the side effects are bearable? What other options are there, i have heard about a simple surgery and I am having her consider the good effects of marijuana.(provided it is legal where you are) I myself have never tried it but I have heard ppl say it works at relieving the pain, has anyone heard of the surgery?I know of the suffering that you guys go threugh, even though i have been blessed by not having migranes, i have watched my mother in her pain for all my life and I sympathize.Loking forward to replies.

hello i have suffered with the most severe migains ever seen by the medical society here in my province. ive tried almost every medication out there from herbal to pharm.and i have finally found not a single cure all but a combination that really works finally.and it is 10 mg rizatriptan (maxalt rpd) and half a gram of marijuana smoked.also packing my head in ice as well...i do not smoke marijuana for recreation...as i do not care for its affects under usal circumstances, but it is the only thing that i have found that stops the vomiting, and puts me to sleep FAST.
PLEASE do not take marijuana ALONE for migraine,,,,as i have found out...unfortunatly....it ended up being the wost experiance of my life...but together with my maxalt and in small doses i can actually live a normal life....if anyone has any questions or if any doctors that read this would like to disscus this i would be happy to help...i am at the moment applying for medicinal marijuana from my canadain government...

Hello,I am new here and really need some answers or advice.I have had migraines about on the average of 2 a month for the past 14 years.I have tried everything on the shelves and nothing helps. My doc has me on imitrex and it only helps half the time, and thats sleeping all day too.The other half of the time it's a trip to the ER.I also have reg headaches every day.I take an average of 4-6 excedrin migraine a day and it kinda keeps them down but I'm afraid that I will start getting immune to them like I have everything else.I'm on webutrin also for insomnia, lol, even though I still cant sleep much.I have been researching other meds online and have seen that many people have taken Topamax and Depakote for their "cronic daily headaches".But with the topamax i have seen alot of bad side effects and I was wondering if any one had taken the depakote for daily headaches or migraine prevention? and if there is any other med or anything I can do to stop the pain with these migraines and the daily headaches? These headaches are taking over my life, well HAVE taken over my life.If anyone knows any answers please post them.I would really appreciate it .

I'm yet another SEVERE sufferer of migranes,, I thought they were gone for good after my teen years but they recently came back in full force after i had my son,, I have all the symptoms and frankly i'm sick of repeating the list to all the doc's i've seen about them. I have tried excedrin, doesnt work,,then IMETRIX,didnt work and gave me pain in my shoulders, tried ZOMIG, didnt work and gave me severe pain in my shoulders and shortness of breath, tried FIORECET, which has codone in it so i cant take it regularly.I suggest ADVIL MIGRANE GELCAPS cause they actually dull the pain for me and work fast,, but ya know what works for one doesnt work for the next,, its sad that this is such a debilitating condition with no cure, its actually becoming normal for me now to have a migrane for a WEEK sraight . i also suggest before smoking weed to get rid of a migrane and you are at the point where you are vomiting to try fendergan suppository ,, it was given to me during my pregnancy so its safe ,, knocks you out though ,, good luck

Hi David, I also am a sufferer. I have had these ****** things for over five years now. I can tell you about mine and what I have to do and then it is up to you. 1st I strongly suggest you see your regular dr. I have them about twice a week and usually they are there when I wake up. I can feel the veins on the side of my head swelled under my fingertips, I'm light sensitive, and sometimes nauseas. NOTHING but meds will take it away. my greatest success is two tylenol and two advil (off brand are great), then be very still in a dark cool room. The bad news I have for you is that from what I personally know, they are chronic; no cure; never going away. There are now drugs that help prevent them such as blood pressure meds in low doses. Be really careful mixing meds, under your dr.'s knowledge only. My Mom is a RN and has taught me a lot over the years, so I always consult her or my dr or even the pharmisist for advice. Good luck to you. If you or any of the other migraine victims would ever like to just chat e-mail me at tonyer71@Yahoo.com

mpperry,
I also have suffered with migraines for twenty years. Once a month, and sometimes not so regularly, I can get one anytime. Have you tried Imitrex ? This was prescribed for me when it was new way back when and at that time only injection form was available. It was the first thing that had ever given me relief. It comes in pill form and is very popular. There have since been many prescribed meds for migrain on the market but I stick With Imitrex because it works for me. I usually tell people to Forget about over the counter products and home remedies. I am surprised this really works for you. Real migrianes require more than a pain killer to get to the root of the problem. They are caused by a swelling of the blood vessels. Only true migraine medications will help.

Hi mountaingirl,
I have suffered with migarines since my early thirties. I am now 49.Different people have different triggers, and for some women it is the hormonal changes that take place during the month. They are called menstrual migraines. This does not mean you necessarily always get them when you are menstruating. It could be just before or after or even when you are ovulating. This is how it is with me. I am guessing since you get them twice a month this could be your trigger. I am telling you this because I have found that understanding what in your body is causing you to be sensetive to an occurance sometimes helps. I also take Imitrex but can only have success when I keep the following in mind. I must take it at the first feelings of a migraine coming on. If I wait too long it does not help a lot. Sometimes I will take it before the pain even starts but I have the pre symptoms. Unusual fatigue, ringing in my ears, a feeling of disorientation and just generally not feeling right. I have gotten used to knowing all the signs and when one might be coming. keeping a log of what time of the month you get them as it relates to your cycle will help. I don't know if this is your situation but if it is , good luck . I also have found that taking 800 mg of Ibuprophin ( i.e. 4 tablets ) gives the Imitrex and extra kick. One other thing to consider is that you are not taking enough of a dosage of the Imitrex. Depending on how bad your headaches are your doctor can safely prescribe 25, or 50 or even 100 mg tablets. I need to take 100 mg or two fifties for a bad one.

I was on imitex it stated on 25mg and then went to 100mg just to dull the pain. I went to the headache center in Michigan under DR. Joel Saper he has a book out also. All they did was put me on imitex and it's all about drugs. I now don't have any migranes. Cynthia

Clare,
A true migrane is on either side of the brain it's when the muscles contract and they swell. I have had these for 17yrs and all they do is meds. Don't do meds all they do is make it so it dulls. I will talk more about what I have been thru. My E mail is CRshapeworks@msn.com I have done all the meds and they just didn't work after a while. E mail me and I will tell you what has worked for me. David, I didn't see a date for when you posted so I hope this isn't outdated. I used to have frequent headaches I believed were migraines. As I got older, I had the headaches more often than I didn't. I am a female so I don't know if my solution will work for you, but here it is. I bought a thyroid enhancement from Nature's Sunshine to help with weight loss. With the first dose, my headache was gone within fifteen minutes! And as long as I took the capsules, they didn't return. And, after a few years, they stopped completely and I don't take it anymore. I mention the gender because I have also gone through monopause so my problems may have been hormaonal, but it can't hurt to try. Do a google search for Nature's Sunshine to find a dealer near you. I think the product was called IFC.

Good luck,
Selah

I have suffered from migraines since i was a kid - throwing up, crying, throbbing pounding headache with major sensitivities to light and sound. absolutely miserable.

i have been using "Nexoprin" for the past 7 months (i don't know if i'm allowed to post the website or not, but it's just the product name) anyway, it's been used in Germany for like over a decade, prescribed for migraine all the time, but you don't need a prescription to get it in the states. i have only had about three migraines in the past 7 months, if you can believe that! there is a second part to "Nexoprin" that is a liquid you put under your tongue to stop a migraine if you feel one coming and it totally works (it does not taste bad at all, it barely has any taste). i can feel the difference in my head within about a minute. and i notice that feel calmer and less panicky, which maybe might have helped provoke my migraines in the past - all that worry about the pain and nausea.

anyway, i absolutely recommend it to anyone who has migraine. it completely works.

you can also read documented studies about the ingredient in it that works in the medical journal Neurology (dec. 28, 2004 issue). i read it myself. and now that i've been using it i know that it really does work, i tell everyone i know that has migraines (that's why i'm posting this here!)

hope this helps a lot of people

I also have suffered from migraines severely since I was 7 years old. It runs in my family (grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, etc.) My mother was just diagnosed with "Perpetual Migraine" which means her head hurts all of the time. The relief that we get comes from different things. The common factor in migraine sufferers is variation! Even the drugs that work for one person do nothing for another. It's been a trial and error process for me to find what will help and what my triggers are.

Once you have a migraine, there's not a lot you can do to get rid of it! My best suggestion is you have to troubleshoot & plan for prevention, not curing them. Many people have triggers such as too much/too little of: certain foods, caffeine intake, physical activity, sunlight, heat, sleep, & STRESS!... So if you can find a way to balance your lifestyle with a healthy diet/exercise/rest routine, it will help reduce the frequency of your headaches & keep your body in better condition to handle your daily stressors & triggers. And if you feel one coming on, take whatever medicine works for you, and try changing what you are doing. (If you're watching t.v., get out for a walk. If you've been on your feet, rest for a while. If you're out in the sun, get inside... etc.) Hope this helps. good luck.

33/female/never been pregnant:
i had migraines from age 20 to age 32; i had puking, nausea, dizziness, light sensitivity, blurry/spotty vision, sometimes problems on the other end; i was useless during them; sometimes they happened up to 3 times per week; sometimes they happened once a month; they always seemed worse during the week & a half before my period; my employers didn't understand because they saw those ****** imitrex commercials that say you can function during a migraine; drs tried everything-i even injected myself w/the imitrex shots at one point in time, tried zomig, pretty much all the meds, even a mild high-blood-pressur prescription; finally, dr kept me on the extrememly mild high-blood-pressure prescription and added an extremely mild anti-depressent prescription & I HAVE NOT HAD A SINGLE MIGRAINE SINCE!!! After twelve years of those nasty migraines, I've been free of them for one year & ten months!!! :-) A fellow migraine sufferer (female age 50) tried just the mild anti-depressent & has been relieved of her migraines as well. I know I would have tried just about anything while I was having my migraines . . . so, if this information helps even just one of you, I will be so glad!!! Good luck to each one of you in getting rid of those nasty critters!!! -migrainesbgone

My name is Girod I'm 3 7 and I have suffered from migraines for as long as I can remember. I'm pretty sure it was passed down from my mother but I'm not entirely sure. I have a really bad one about once every 4 or 5 months. By really bad I mean I vomit once or twice an hour for 6 to 7 hours straight then pass out so i can't take anything because it just comes out . Of course I've got the pain that goes with it as well. I feel if you really get migraines (not everyone understands what they really are) it's bad enough no matter how severe . So I'm not saying that I'm worse off then anyone else, I would just like to get a handle on what's going on in my head and if anyone can help I would love to hear it.

I tried smoking weed twice, once it worked and the other time it didn't. I'm a little scared to keep throwing different drugs at this HUGE problem but I'm not sure what else to do. I have Kaiser (and I love them) but I mentioned smoking weed and there was no way they were opened minded enough to say "hey, that might help". It was a NO as soon as it came out of my month. Instead they handed me a prescriptions for another one of their drugs to try. Everything I'm reading is saying pretty much the same thing "we are F@&%ed". I don't understand in this day and age why someone can't figure something out. Sorry if I sound angry but I just had one and it's getting old. Please help!!!!!

Hi,

I recently got some good information on migraine. It looks like it is always triggered by something.

My migraine has reduced a lot after I started looking for (and removing) triggers from my life. This is the site where I found this information and tips about triggers:

Migraine and Headache relief program

Has anyone else tried this?

david, medicines are your best bet to get rid of the pain, however, if you couple medications with home remedies, you will see that you feel better much faster. Icing my face and trigger points is really what works best for me. There are a few products out there that let you ice your face without having to constantly hold an ice pack up for hours. My favorite of these products is called the icecaddy. It is a velcro sling that goes around ones head and holds icepacks in place for as long as it is needed. It's really great because the ice does not directly press against ones face so it's not unbearably cold (there are actually pockets that the icepacks slide into). If i take my medication, than lay in a dark room and use the icecaddy for a while...I start feeling a lot better and more refreshed!
